Preston was born in Dallas, Texas on August 21, 1983. He started acting during his senior year in High School and then studied Theatre and Radio Television Film at the University of Texas at Austin. In Austin, Preston performed in over a dozen plays and two TV pilots("Jack and Bobby" and Richard Linklater's "$5.15/hr"). After graduating in 2005, Preston moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting in Film and Television.Preston received a lot of acclaim for his performance in John Patrick's, The Hasty Heart. He portrayed Lachie, a Scotsman who was sent to a hospital ward after a battle wound in World War II. For research, Preston flew to Scotland to learn about Scotland's perspective in the war, and to record and study the Scotish dialect. Barry Pineo,a critic from the Austin Chronicle, wrote, "Almost without exception, the dialect work in the production is exemplary, particularly that of Preston Jones as Lachie. Moreover, Jones brings to the difficult role a quality that is absolutely essential: a likable innocence...."Since moving to Los Angeles, Preston's talent, dedication and commitment to acting has lead him in roles opposite stars Chris O'Donnell, Adam Goldberg, and Janine Turner in both Television and Film.
