Kranz attended Harvard-Westlake High School in North Hollywood, California.
He was a star actor at his high school, performing as the title character in King Lear and Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar.
Kranz attended high school with Jake Gyllenhall, who starred in Donnie Darko (one of Kranz's first movies).
In college, Fran was a member of Suite 13 Sketch Comedy, and of the Exit Players improv comedy troupe.
