Early in his career, he wrote advertising jingles for such clients as State Farm Insurance, McDonalds, Dr. Pepper soda and Stri-Dex anti-acne medicine.
Won a Special Tony Award in 1977.

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.
"Looks Like We Made It" (written by Richard Kerr and Will Jennings) charted in July 1977 knocking Shaun Cassidy's cover of "Da Doo Ron Ron" from the number one slot in the US.
Contrary to popular belief, his signature tune "I Write the Songs" was not written by him, but by (Beach Boy) Bruce Johnston. The song ousted the Bill Fries (C.W. McCall) hit "Convoy" from the US number one position in January 1976.
His first chart-topper "Mandy" (written by Scott English and Richard Kerr) was originally titled "Brandy." The song toppled Elton John's rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" from the number one chart spot in January 1975.
