He was spokesman for the American Humane Hearing Dog Program from 1980 through 1982. His personal photography was exhibited in 1988 at C.E. Rynd Photographic Fine Arts in Seattle's Pioneer Square. Received a BFA from the University of Washington. In 1978 the Professional Photographers Association of America demanded he be fired from "Lou Grant" (1977) and threatened a sponsor boycott. Within a year, however, News Photographer magazine, the publication of the National Press Photographers Association, put him on its cover and acknowledged that his portrayal had heightened interest in photojournalism among young people.
