François Girard was born in Quebec in 1963. His career began in Montreal in the art video circuit. In 1984, he founded Zone Productions where he wrote and directed numerous experimental short films, architecture films, dance films, music videos and video installations. Since 1989, his main efforts have been dedicated to feature films. His many projects have received more than eighty international awards. Among these, thirteen Genie Awards and nine Jutra Awards went to _ Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993)_and _ Violon rouge, Le (1998)_, which also received the Oscar for the best original soundtrack. A Grammy Award for the best music film was given to "Peter Gabriel's Secret World", an International Emmy and many other prizes went to Le Dortoir, and eight Dora Awards were voted for Oedipus Rex. His work in commercials was also rewarded with many prizes and the Montreal Publicity Club named him director of the year in 1997.
