Born in Berlin (West) as son of a Hungarian mother Fred Kelemen studied painting, music, philosophy, science of religions and theatre sciences and worked in different theatres as a director's assistant before he began his studies at the German Film & TV Academy Berlin (dffb) in 1989. Since that time, he has made a number of films and videos as director and collaborated as Director of Photography and Cameraman with several film directors like Béla Tarr (Utazás az alföldön (1995), The Man from London (2007)), Gisa Schleelein ("Tatao Samoa"), Yesim Ustaoglu ("Life on their Shoulders"), Gariné Torossian ("Stone, Time Touch"). In 2000 and 2001 he directed several plays at different theaters in Germany. Since 1995 he is working as a guest lecturer at the Centre of Cinematographical Studies of Catalania (C.E.C.C.) in Barcelona/Spain, at the School of Visual Arts (ESBAG) in Geneva/Switzerland and at the Latvian Cultural Academy (LKA) in Riga. Retrospectives of his work had been presented in Lisbon/Portugal (1997), Belgrade/Yugoslavia (2000), Cambride/U.S.A (2000), Athens/Greece (2000), Brussels/Belgium (2001), Oslo/Norway (2001), Hanover/Germany (2002), New York City/U.S.A. (2003), Buenos Aires/Argentina (April 2003), Berlin/Germany (2004), Barcelona/Spain (January 2005), Bern/Switzerland (February 2005) and Ankara/Turkey (March 2006). In 2006 retrospectives of his films will be presented in London/England (September/October), Potsdam/Germany (October/November) and Buenos Aires/Argentina (December). Fred Kelemen is member of the European Film Academy.
