Won 1 silver medal in the 1976 Olympics.
Won 2 gold medals in each of the 1984 & 1988 Olympics for a total of 4 gold medals.
Started going to gyms in his youth as a way to overcome the teasing classmates gave him because of his dyslexia.
Had asthma as a child but outgrew it, and, while still in high school, won an Olympic silver medal. When he retired from competition in 1988, he had earned four gold medals and three world championships.
Inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, 1985.
