Jamie formed the rock band, Merlin, in 1974. The band only produced one album though and eventually broke up in 1976. He spent a few years working with Pete Townshend on the London West End production of Tommy, during which time he married the sister of Bob Webb (Merlin's keyboard player). In the early to mid 80s, he played on tour with The Hollies and the Eric Burdon Band before blasting back onto the pop scene in 1987 with his new band, Broken English. After a few hit singles that band also broke up and Jamie went on to join Chrissie Hynde in The Pretenders for three years until 1993. He co-founded the SAS Band in 1993 and has since played on tours with Mike & The Mechanics, Paul Young, Jimmy Barnes, Bob Geldof and Brian May, amongst others.
