BREAKIN'2 Electric Boogaloo
After the unexpected success of Breakin' the distributors Cannon immediately hatched plans to cash in with a sequel.The original leads were approached and signed up. As Lucinda Dickey said on her website in 2005.."They asked me what i wanted and i gave them a figure. There was no haggling and the deal was done".
Director of the original movie, Joel Silberg, obviously thought he had taken the project as far as he could and wanted nothing to do with any sequel.Undeterred Cannon offered the film to Sam Firstenberg, a low budget Director who had previously worked with Dickey on the instantly forgetable "NINJA III:THE DOMINATION" the previous year, where he attempted to exploit her undoubted tit and ass attributes.
Firstenberg had never directed a dance genre movie before and employed a different strategy to Silberg's simplistic methods of the original.
Joel Silberg realised he was working with professional dancers and not actors in the lead roles due to the limited budgetary restraints of Breakin'.He therefore cleverly overcame this problem with a simple, tight and pacy storyline which concentrated on the dancing abilities of the main characters rather than thier non existent acting strength's.
(Lucinda Dickey had appeared in a couple of movies prior to Breakin' but the majority opinion was that she should stick to dancing,also both her co-stars had never acted at all)
The popularity of Breakin' is proof that Silberg's methods worked extremely well. Unfortunately Firstenberg decided to try and make a sort of musical extravaganza rather than the dance orientated original. Also for reasons known only to himself he attempted to develop the characters of Adolfo Quinones and Michael Chambers which was would have been a tall order even if these guys could act.To achieve this large sections of the movie were devoted to meaningless and inane dialogue in preference to the crisp and effective dance sequences of the original movie. Also he severely curtailed Dickey's character and opportunities to show off her outstanding dancing ability.
Lucinda was understandably somewhat pissed off with these events and her career never recovered from this movie.
"Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo" is probably the worst dance movie ever made and its 94 minutes running time seems like 93 minutes too long. It really has no saving graces and despite grossing over $15 million this movie should only be watched with caution.
Obviously undeterred by this shambles Firstenberg went on to direct such other cinematic gems as "AMAZON WOMEN FROM OUTER SPACE" and "CYBORG COP" {By the way the Music used in this video is from YES, and was the track used for the homepage of Lucinda's superb website, which is sadly no longer on line}
