Con Joan Allen, Kevin Costner, Erika Christensen, Evan Rachel Wood, Keri Russell, Alicia Witt, Mike Binder, Dane Christensen, Danny Webb, Magdalena Manville, Suzanne Bertish, David Firth. Il titolo originale è "The Upside of Anger", che può essere tradotto "al culmine della collera", quella di una quarantenne che soffre di solitudine pur avendo quattro figlie, un paradosso di partenza che ha origine dalla scomparsa del marito, fuggito chissà dove e con chi. E quando la piccola comunità di provincia in cui la donna vive si attiva per risollevarne il morale, la rabbia della donna giunge a livelli di intollerabilità, per lei stessa e per le sue figlie, persino per un vicino di casa mite e comprensivo, ex giocatore di base-ball e dj radiofonico, che Kevin Costner disegna con inusitata finezza, mostrando finalmente quanto aveva lasciato intuire all'inizio della sua carriera. La quarantenne Terry (Joan Allen) è il paradigma di tutte le donne malmaritate e soprattutto incapaci di sollevarsi da uno stato di frustrazione, dovuto in realtà alla giovinezza che se ne va, alle aspettative inevase, alla mediocrità di un'esistenza ormai omologata. E le figlie sono in preda alle loro tempeste ormonali, trascinando il peso della loro giovinezza con l'egoismo tipico delle teen agers, sovrapponendo i loro problemi, legittimi, a quelli altrettanto legittimi della madre. Non è un tema da poco, ma questa intelligente commedia, grazie alla sceneggiatura dello stesso regista, Mike Binder, va in controtendenza, spostando sistematicamente la direzione della vicenda, fino a confondere felicemente le acque. Detto di Costner, che si accolla con umiltà un ruolo subalterno, chi domina la vicenda è la figura di Terry, che Joan Allen interpreta più con la voce che con il resto, come una brava attrice teatrale quale è. Litigi d'amore è un amabile racconto che non ci fa versare una lacrima, ma che ci emoziona. (Andrea De Carlo) [...]L'esempio migliore di come ti può trasformare la rabbia è mia madre. Era la persona più simpatica che io avessi mai conosciuto. La donna più dolce che chiunque avesse mai conosciuto. Poi le cose sono cambiate, e lei è cambiata. È diventata una donna arrabbiata, profondamente arrabbiata. La rabbia l'ha fatta diventare una donna triste e amareggiata. Se non fosse mia madre la prenderei a schiaffi. Si, la guarderei negli occhi e le direi tutto quello che penso. E poi fuggirei il più lontano possibile. [...]La rabbia e il rancore ti possono sbarrare la strada. Adesso l'ho capito. Bruciano l'aria che respiri, la vita, ti divorano, ti soffocano. Ma la rabbia è reale, e persino quando non lo è ti può cambiare. Ti modella, ti trasforma in quello che non sei. L'unico aspetto positivo è la persona che diventerai dopo. Se tutto va bene, un giorno ci si sveglia e si scopre di non aver paura di affrontare il viaggio. La verità è, nella migliore delle ipotesi, una storia raccontata a metà. E la rabbia, come la crescita, arriva a scatti, e a strappi, e al risveglio offre un nuovo giorno alla comprensione, e una promessa di quiete. Ma che posso saperne io? Io sono solo una ragazzina.
