Art Treasures of Nebraska - George Segal

"Times Square at Night" (1970). At Joslyn Art Museum, "Times Square at Night" is George Segal's tribute to urban life. Segal, a pop art icon of the 1960s, celebrates routine daily moments as extraordinary cultural expressions. His trademark is crafting plaster castings of real human figures - molded upon friends and acquaintances - and juxtaposing them in mixed media tableaus to reflect his view of urban lifestyle. Times Square at Night depicts a busy, yet lonely street, highlighted by ghostly castings of two isolated men.

George Segal's Holocaust Memorial

Visual Writing Assignment for GS 606 Crossing Borders at Academy of Art University --Amberlyn Nelson

George Segal's public sculpture "The Holocaust" is located in the former Golden Gate Cemetery, which is now Lincoln Park and Municipal Golf Course and home of the Palace of the Legion of Honor. While researching the area I found out that as many as 11,000 bodies still remain buried beneath the earth at this location. It is interesting that they chose this spot for the monument. The memorial is dedicated to the estimated 6+ million Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust.

The Holocaust Memorial is tucked away. Only a large marble sign is seen from the parking lot across the street from the Legion of Honor. To view the sculpture, you must walk over and look down into a square cement pit where the memorial lies. It is a haunting vision of a pile of 10 nude bodies that lie in a pinwheel and while the 11th figure, that is clothed and standing, has his back to the bodies. The standing figure is looking out through a barbed wire fence at the Pacific Ocean and the Marin Headlands, to me this is a statement of hope. One of the female figures has an apple in her hand, which has one bite mark taken out of it. "This is a reflection of the idea of original sin and the biblical connection between Jews and Christians, and raises the question of this relationship during the Holocaust. There is another figure that looks "Christ-like" in appearance and again this reflects the Jewishness of Jesus." (www.chgs.umn.edu) Visitors can descend and walk down and around the sculpture, once doing so they come to witness what they will never forget.

Since this piece of art is in a public setting it has been subject to graffiti, George Segal said in a press conference (1998) that this only reminds us that problems of prejudice and hate have not been solved. On the other hand, often flowers and letters are left behind as a haunting homage to those who were persecuted.

There are four memorial plagues accompanying Segal's sculpture. Each is repeated with "We will never forget...."

George Segal was born on November 26th, 1924 and died on June 9th, 2000. Segal was an American painter and sculptor associated with the Pop Art Movement. He was presented with a National Medal of Arts in 1999.

Barbra Streisand asks the guys to fuck off

This is from the classic comedy "The Owl and the pussycat", starring Streisand and George Segal. Barbra's line was available when the movie opened in 1970 and later when the VHS was released in 1993. But the sentence was removed for the DVD release in 2001. It says a lot about our increasingly hypocrite XXI-century society: we're allowed to witness the massacre of innocent children in some distant poor Middle East country but God forbid we will hear a "fuck off" in a Hollywood production.
From Gustavo de Santa Fe.

Russian Roulette (1975)

Title from spy movie with George Segal. Segal only made two spy movies in his career - The brilliant Quiller Memorandum and this. This is a very typical seventies movie - and here I am not sure I mean that positively. Filmed a bit differently and made more serious this could have been an excellent movie. It does have a nice rooftop ending that manages to be thrilling.

WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? [TRAILER]

Theatrical trailer for Ernest Lehman's production of Edward Albee's 1966 classic "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Segal and Sandy Dennis. Directed by Mike Nichols. One literate and profane night in the pathological marriage of two tortured souls, a middle-aged New England professor and his carping wife. Turning the underbelly of bourgeois academia into a microcosm of human relationships in all their arduous complexities, Mike Nichols' auspicious debut feature is a harrowing descent into the private lives and painful secrets of two couples thrown together for an evening. Based on the controversial play by Edward Albee, this noir-ish 1966 drama stars former real-life couple Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor (Best Actress Oscar), in what many critics consider to be their best performances. George (Burton) is an associate professor of history who has turned to alcohol to deal with his vituperative, vicious wife Martha (Taylor), whose appetite for administering abuse knows no bounds. Invited to the couple's home for late-night drinks are new professor Nick (George Segal), and his naive wife Honey (Sandy Dennis-Supporting Actress Oscar), where over the course of the evening, the polished veneer of the hosts tarnishes grotesquely. The witty repartee of consummate sophisticate Martha degenerates into increasingly violent verbal abuse of both her husband and guests, while George's stoic facade crumbles both physically and emotionally. The horrified Nick and Honey initially come off as happier foils to the misery of the older married couple, but the guests are soon mirroring George and Martha in their mutual antagonism, giving voice to buried resentments and alcohol-fueled revelations of repressed injuries. Elizabeth Taylor, "Virginia Woolf" (part 1) by Rich Bassett

It is said to have been the film that changed the course of film production. The famous 1966 Mike Nichols directed film, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? " (based on the Broadway play by Edward Albee) is set on the campus of a small, New England university. It opens with the main characters, George (Richard Burton) and Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) coming home from a party at her father's house. The two of them clearly care deeply for each other, but events have turned their marriage into a nasty battle between two disenchanted, cynical enemies. Even though the pair arrives home at two o'clock in the morning, they are expecting guests: the new math professor and his wife.
Of course, as it turns out, this new, young professor, Nick (George Segal), actually works in the biology department. He and his wife, Honey (Sandy Dennis), walk into a brutal social situation. In the first act, "Fun and Games," Martha and George try to fight and humiliate each other in new, inventive ways. As they peel away each other's pretenses and self-respect, George and Martha use Honey and Nick as pawns, transforming their guests into an audience to witness humiliation, into levers for creating jealousy, and into a means for expressing their own sides of their mutual story. The evening turns into a nightmare. George and Martha even attack Honey and Nick, attempting to force them to reveal their dirty secrets and true selves. Finally, in the, "The Exorcism," everyone's secrets have been revealed and purged. Honey and Nick go home, leaving Martha and George to try to rebuild their shattered marriage.
This film brought Elizabeth her second Academy Award and just about every other film award that could be awarded that year. Through her success and victory was bittersweet as her husband, Richard Burton (though nominated) did not get the Academy Award.
Clearly this is a must see. Please enjoy the few short film clips showcasing Elizabeth Taylor at her very best.
