Elevated - Part 1

This short film was written and directed by Vincenzo Natali, writer and director of the original movie "Cube". This film relies on one set, an elevator, and the viewer's imagination, not big special effects to create thrill and suspense.

Terry Gilliam confuses a little girl

A clip from "Getting Gilliam" by Vincenzo Natali shows Terry Gilliam talking to Jodelle Ferland about the word "derivative" in reference to a school book report on Tideland. Perhaps he's not as close to being a 9-year-old girl as he'd like us to believe.

Nick Cannon and Selita Ebanks split

Hello it's Friday, October 5, 2007. I'm Rebecca Field with a UPI entertainment update.

R&B star Nick Cannon and model Selita Ebanks are callign it quits. Ebanks rep tells People magazine teh two have called off their engagement and are splitting up. Her rep says they both need time to focus on their careers but will remain good friends. Cannon popped the question 5 months ago on a jumbotron in New York's Times Square.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is in Spain filming a new TV series. The Oscar winning actress is reportedly traveling around the country with 3 friends for a PBS series...set to air in the U.S. next fall. Paltrow will accompany food critic Marc Bittman, chef Mario Batali and Spanish actress Claudia Bassols. They're apparently taking a road trip, expected to take up to 4 months, experiencing Spanish culture and tasting the cuisine.

Last night's VH1 Hip Hop Honors celebrated the biggest stars in hip-hop music. Big stars hit the red carpet for the event including rappers LL Cool J and Bow Wow. The event was hosted by comedian Tracey Morgan and featured performance by Timbaland and Tweet as well as Missy Elliot and Nelly Furtado. The fourth annual event will air on Monday on VH1.

Oscar winner Adrien Brody and actress Sarah Polley are teaming up for a new sci-fi film. "Splice," directed by Vincenzo Natali will apparently focus on genetic engineering. It's set to start filming next month in Toranto. Brody is known for his award winning role in "The Pianist," and Polley will soon appear in the HBO series "John Adams."

Meanwhile, Brody is preparing for the U.S. release of his new film. He joined a star studded cast on the red carpet last night for the premiere of "The Darjeeling Limited." The film stars actors Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson and Angelica Houston. The film is about 3 brothers traveling on a train to India in an attempt to patch their relationship. It's already hit theaters in Canada but will be in most U.S. theaters today.

That's all for now, thanks for watching!

Five Characters in Search of an Exit 1/3

The Twilight Zone (S3 Ep79) Original airdate: Dec 22, 1961

An Army major in dress uniform, a clown, a hobo, a ballet dancer and a bagpiper find themselves in a giant cylinder with no memory of who they are or how they got there. The major is the newest arrival, and is the most determined to escape. The others point out that they have a very odd existence-they do not ever need or desire food and drink; in fact, they seem to be totally devoid of feeling..

(opening narration) Clown. Hobo. Ballet Dancer. Bagpiper. And an Army Major. A collection of question marks. Five improbable entities stuck together into a pit of darkness. No logic, no reason, no explanation. Just a prolonged nightmare in which fear, loneliness, and the unexplainable walk hand in hand through the shadows. In a moment, we'll start collecting clues as to the whys, the whats, and the wheres. We will not end the nightmare, only explain it, because this is the Twilight Zone..

(closing narration) Just a barrel, a dark depository where are kept the counterfeit, make-believe pieces of plaster and cloth, wrought in the distorted image of human life. But this added, hopeful note: perhaps they are unloved only for the moment. In the arms of children there can be nothing but love. A clown, a tramp, a bagpipe player, a ballet dancer and a major. Tonight's cast of players on the odd stage known as the Twilight Zone..

The title is an allusion to Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello and to No Exit by Sartre. This episode was remade as Child's Play, a 1986 episode of Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense directed by Val Guest. The story was updated with a science fiction theme, featuring robot dolls trapped inside a futuristic doll house.

Vincenzo Natali named this episode as an inspiration for his film Cube. Additionally, it has been stated that Toy Story was inspired by it. An episode of the TV show Felicity parodies this episode. The little girl who appears at the end of this episode was portrayed by the daughter of longtime Twilight Zone producer Buck Houghton.

One of the short films made for On the Lot titled "Army Guy" is about an Army man who wakes up wearing a dress and is surrounded by many copies of the same people, complete with fake drinks and furniture. We later find that he is an action figure loaned by a boy to his young sister.

Cube (trailer)

Cube 1998

A taut little paranoid suspense thriller, the low-budget Cube follows a handful of diverse people who wake up inside a uniquely designed prison -- a gigantic cube with individual chambers that are constantly changing configuration, much like a rotating Rubik's Cube. It's a simple Darwinian tale of survival of the fittest as the prisoners ponder the nature and identity of their jailers and struggle to find a way out.

Starring: Nicole DeBoer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlett, Maurice Dean Wint

Cypher - Trailer
