	William James (W6MUV). Memorial The life of the worlds best Father in pictures. Bill was born on Jan. 6th 1919 in San Francisco, His mother Lena moved the family to Terra Bella Calif. a few years later when Bills' brother Frank was born. He grew up on a farm outside of Porterville during the great depression of the 1930s, in a small house with no plumbing or electricity he ran his "Ham" radio station off of a generator that he had made with a 1/2 hp Briggs&Stratton gas engine. After his graduation from Porterville Union High in 1937 he started school at Porterville Junior Collage, but that was cut short with the death of his father in 1938 when he had to go to work loading trucks for the Porterville Poultry Assn. to help suport the family. In Jan. of 1942 he quit his job at the poultry assn. and entered the U.S Navy to serve his country. After gaduating a "Aviation Chief Radio Technician" from the Naval school at Treasure Is. in San Francisco he was sent to NAS Kodiak Alaska where he was part of a crew in a PBY "Catalina" (in his later years he always remembered his time in Alaska and in the PBY fondly) Near the end of the war he was sent to the "Office of Research & Inventions, Special Devices Division" where he worked with the "Link Trainer" an early vertion of the flight simulator. When he was discharged from the Navy he returned to the central valley in California where he worked in several radio stations as anouncer, he also had a radio repair shop for a short time. In 1948 he decided to return to collage and in 1952 he gaduated from UCLA with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He then went to work for Bendix Aviation where in 1956 he asked a book keeper named Velma to go for a ride in his Aeronca Champ in the smoggy skies over L.A. , six months later they were married. After That they bought a home in Santa Barbera where they lived untill Dad took a job at Lawrenc Radiation Lab. in Livermore. Then in 1962 Terri, the first of his two children, was born in the hospital on the UC Berkley campus. Two years later in 1964 I came along. In the fall of 1964 Bills mother Lena died and he made the choice to leave the "Lab" and move back to Terra Bella to help his brother Frank with the family farm, Bill had also purchased in the '50s another 10 acers next to his mothers place that he wanted to plant with navel oranges. So he had a house built in the N/W corner of the 10 acers, parked his Aeronca next to it and brought the family down from Livermore. To be continued...... View Video
