Helen Mirren As Elizabeth I -- Start Of Program

Helen Mirren is said to be the only actress to play both Queen Elizabeths.

Elizabeth exploited divisions among all her advisors and subjects to help fend off the marriage problem. All agreed she should marry, but they could never agree on whom.

Elizabeth thought of marrying her pal from childhood, who was also a fellow prisoner when she was in the Tower-- Dudley, Earl of Leicester. But Cecil's strong opposition to it meant her kingdom could be torn apart. The relationship eventually evolved into the very close and warm freindship shown here, some twenty years later. The suggestion of sex kept intrigue and complications flowing in court and in his marriage--to her design and favor.

Helen Mirren ... Queen Elizabeth I
Jeremy Irons ... Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester
Patrick Malahide ... Sir Francis Walsingham
Ian McDiarmid ... William Cecil, Lord Burghley
Toby Salaman ... Dr. Lopez

Elizabeth I (2005) (TV)

Directed by
Tom Hooper (who worked with Mirren on "Prime Suspect 6: The Last Witness")

Helen Mirren's Elizabeth I: Anjou courts Elizabeth, pt 1/2

Elizabeth wanted to lead on and confuse people and powerful leaders of her day about her true intentions with Anjou---she was so successful at it that historians today still argue over how serious she ever was about the marriage!

Historical reports say that the Duke had a pitted face from childhood smallpox , and a bit of a hunched back due to spinal deformity.

Helen Mirren is said to be the only actress to play both Queen Elizabeths, and she has a jolly lot of fun with this role---the pathos, humor, mercurial nature of a queen in her 40s, but a queen acting younger in this sequence (acted by a Mirren in her 60s!).

Helen Mirren ... Queen Elizabeth I
Jeremy Irons ... Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester
Jérémie Covillault ... Duke of Anjou
Patrick Malahide ... Sir Francis Walsingham
Ian McDiarmid ... William Cecil, Lord Burghley

note to my YouTube friends: my former account, "GreatPerformers", was removed due to repeated copyright violations (none involved the Helen Mirren stuff!). I have decided to put most of the plays and TV dramas in this account, and the music in another (called "TheGreatPerformers").

Helen Mirren's Elizabeth I: Anjou courts Elizabeth, pt 2/2

Elizabeth I really enjoyed the Duke of Anjou, and called him her "little frog".

Elizabeth had a pet name for nearly all favourites, and Anjou called himself "Grenouille" in a few of the "love letters" to Elizabeth I.

the appellation "frog" have been bestowed on various foreigners, by the British, since the 14th century. It is only since the 17th that it has been applied soley to the French.

RiffTrax w Mike Nelson - Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith

http://www.rifftrax.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=85

The Sith is back, and this time he has come to make ponderous speeches to the gathered Senate and kick tail -- and he's all out of ponderous speeches to the gathered Senate! Ian McDiarmid steals the show as the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine (not to be confused with the heart medication of the same name. Palpatine is not for everyone. Ask your doctor if Palpatine might be right for you.) He inhabits the character showing astonishing range: now fey and annoying, now wrinkled and laughable. As to the rest of the cast -- it's the darndest thing, but I can't recall that there was anyone else even in the movie.

There was a Darth Vader costume, I believe, but that was filled by a wax statue and manipulated digitally to remove any possible chance that it would be interesting in any way. And there was something called a Ewan McGregor, but further research shows that to be a technical term used by the key grip for a kind of light stand.

Oh, and Natalie Portman was in it, kind of.

Mike is joined by Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy on the RiffTrax for this, the Sithiest film ever made!
