The band called W is comprised of Irish-born brothers David and Kevin Connolly who each are responsible for the vocals, guitars and percussion. Scot Walters is on the bass. Kim Carroll is on "guitarchitecture" and Avi Sills is on the drums and percussion. W described themselves as a "band of crazy (brave) men who have believed in each other and seen in each other the true potential of the human nature when focused on love and music". Their message is an integral part of W's music. Words of love, hope and happiness are shared with each listener. But equally important are the wonderful performances by these very talented musicians. Kim plays the guitar with grace and originality. Avi and Scot hold down the fort with style and substance, while Kevin and David sing together beautifully. Where did 'Marshvegas' come from?
MARSHFIELD -- It's been celebrated in song, name-dropped by an Emmy-nominated actor and uttered, irony-soaked, by generations of bored teens.
Viva Marshvegas!
How this oceanside 'burb best known for its beaches and annual summer fair picked up its Sin City-inspired moniker is one of history's little mysteries. But like any bit of New England lore, the townsfolk have plenty of theories.
Singer-songwriter Kevin Connolly grew up in Marshfield and penned the musical homage "Marshvegas" for his 1995 album "Little Town." For him, the nickname is an affectionate one.
"The idea of Marshvegas with big bright lights, high rollers and big shows is kind of a joke," he said. "The cultural and entertainment offerings started and finished with the Road House," he said of the bar on Route 139.
Many Marshfield residents share Connolly's tongue-in-cheek take on his hometown, including Linda Emerson.
"I was always under the impression that the kids in high school thought it was extremely boring here in Marshfield and it was cynical to call it 'Marshvegas,'" Emerson said.
Still, some say the name is a nod to entertainment venues like the Rexicana ballroom that made the Brant Rock section of town a popular spot for the annual influx of summer vacationers.
Val Blinn, an administrative assistant at the Marshfield Board of Health, subscribes to this explanation.
"Years ago it used to mean the Rexicana," she said of the town's nickname. "Then you think of the beaches, of course. And the old roller rink we used to have Then the Brant Rock Esplanade and all the activities there. We used to have movies, and there was a bowling alley. Just all the hangouts."
But perhaps that quaint slice of Americana -- the Marshfield Fair -- launched the Las Vegas comparison. For 10 nights in the heat of summer, Marshfield sparkles and buzzes with flashing lights and music, not to mention bumper-to-bumper traffic. And, until 1991, fair-goers could lay a few dollars down at the wildly popular horse races. Even now that itch to gamble can be scratched with dozens of fair games.
"The Office" boss and seasonal Marshfield resident Steve Carrell gave a shout-out to Marshvegas on the red carpet at last year's Academy Awards, releasing the provincial sobriquet upon the world.
Whatever its origin, there is one thing about Marshvegas that is no mystery to Blinn.
"It basically just means home," she said.
