Dog Altogether at Edinburgh Festival 2007
Paddy Considine talks about making his directorial debut on the short film Dog Altogether.
Audiences may have recently seen Paddy Considine running for his life in Paul Greengrass' The Bourne Ultimatum, but he was in far more relaxed mood when his directorial debut - a short called Dog Altogether - premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Conceived while the actor was working on a film set in Spain, Dog Altogether is a brutal yet moving look at a man of violence who keeps losing the fight to keep his rage under control. Anyone who's seen My Name Is Joe or The Magdalene Sisters will not be surprised to learn that Peter Mullan plays the walking time bomb central character, Joseph. Mullan is as compelling as always, and it's no surprise that Paddy Considine says he wouldn't have made the movie if Mullan hadn't agreed to star. (Like so many actors on short movies, Mullan gave his time for free.)
Inspired by, but not specifically about, his father, Paddy Considine's short delivers quite a punch. And a kick. And a headbutt. It's gripping, visceral cinema, and suggests he may be changing his day job at some point in the future.
