Robert Banks - A Mighty Good Way
This is another performance filmed for my now legendary documentary, "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". I filmed and interviewed over three hundred people and 131 artists performing their Northern Soul classic songs, for a six disc DVD box set extravaganza, called "The Strange World Of Northern Soul", with twenty four hours of footage, including some rare footage of the Motorcity reunion. The project started in 1997, was released on VHS tape and premiered to 1300 people at the King George's Hall in Blackburn in July 1999, then took four more years to refine and re-edit into its DVD release in 2003. A life's labour of love. And here, filmed in New Jersey, is the amazing soul legend, Robert Banks. Gospel singer, pianist and choral leader Robert Banks is best known among soul fans, and Northern Soul fans particularly, for the rocking "A Mighty Good Way" on Verve, which was a huge unexpected smash on the Northern Soul scene, which is rare for a purely Gospel record. Banks recorded an album for Verve, The Message, which featured Banks and other soloists doing gospel tunes with touches of soul and pop such as "A Mighty Good Way" and "So Much to Thank Him For", which has a nice groove and good singing by Banks and a femme chorus. Banks was the arranger for the Soul Music version of "Jesus Christ Superstar", and was the arranger on literally hundreds of soul classics coming out of the New York area in the 1960s and 1970s. He still lives with his wife in New Jersey, and still plays piano to this day. His arrangements covered so many soul legends, like Hoagy Lands, Jimmy Scott, Curtis Blandon,
