Great Movie Scenes - Boogie Nights
Another Hall of Fame scene. Brilliant direction by Paul Thomas Anderson and superb acting by Mark Wahlberg, John C.Reilly, Thomas Jane, and Alfred Molina, as the first 3 go to Molina's house to sell him a kilo of baking soda for $5000.
The acting is dynamite, and the music is perfect to add to the drama. Somewhat funny also. Just a great scene.
Paul Thomas Anderson is a great director. He has only released 4 major films- Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love and Magnolia. He did just complete one that should be released early next year. Each of those films use a great troupe of actors and the direction is always fantastic.
I read that for this scene specifically, he asked Wahlberg, Reilly and Jane to not sleep for 2 days so they would actually look like the drug addicts they were portraying at this stage of the film. And it worked out- as they all looked like hell.
Also, it is said that Anderson did NOT tell those 3 that the kid would be lighting firecrackers in the room during the scene- he kept this hidden from them so they would be genuinely shocked and surprised when the firecrackers went off- which they were- as shown by their reactions.
The 3 songs in this scene are Sister Christian by Night Ranger, Jessies Girl by Rick Springfield, and 99 Luftaballoons by Nena as this part was set in the mid-eighties.
Just a great, intense scene.
