OSCARS CONTENDERS 2008. ----HDTVNEWS-REVIEW:The Venice Film festival highlights 2007 includes a complex legal drama "Michael Clayton", starring George Clooney and a melancholy Iraq war film In the valley of Elah. But it's a pity to see a sadly not-so-well-made Cassandra's dream film from Woody Allen...Venice has a long time reputation as a launch-pad for films that are to be major contenders in Awards seasons...Recently THE QUEEN and George Clooney's great classic GOOD NIGHT. AND GOOD LUCK began their journey to success on the Lido di venezia! just to mention a few among many oscar winning performances and flms...among the classics!
Michael Clayton is to be on the list this year...(!?) George Clooney plays the main role, a lawyer. The law firm client's reputation is at sake. The U/North agri-chemical multinational and (Tilda Swinton) the company in-house counsel reveals to be not what it appeared at first glance... Clayton is trapped in beween the law firm senior litigator (Tom Wilkinson) in his spectacular breakdown, and the multinational tricks and its dark angel (villain) the in-house counsel...
A Great subject... though too multilayered story... The personal layer: Clayton personal life and emotional interferences ( His beautiful son / a great very young actor ! who delivers a fabulous performance side by side with George Clooney as his father in the film ). He is divorced, with gambling debts a business venture in ruins... Clayton personal life becomes more complicated, because his professional if gets more complex too... The law firm goes through a major disaster as the senior lawyer has a real breakdown that brings unexpected and more troubles... Clayton is called to save the day!
The multinational and corporate world layer, brought to our attention thanks to the settings of the story, is part of the matter of that beautiful film, as the story reveals the law firm deals within a complicated situation, and unveils a corrupted multinational (counsel). The law firm senior lawyer having gone through a major breakdown, the multinational is now trapped into an inextricable series of (villain) matters...
The law level, thanks to G. Clooney (Clayton) performance, as he becomes the fixer at the large corporate law firm in New York who runs damage control for the company, tidying up a variety of embarrassments... The corporate lawyer professional world layer is to be considered as other layers, if not the most important aspect of the film...
The Screenwriter, Tony GILROY, is showing the dark side of the corporations world... and the "intrigues" are at all levels... However, the story requires an alert audience. Tilda Swindon is definitely a match as a nuanced character (and finally as we will discover as a villain ) and certainly embellish and enhance the performance and character played by G. Clooney who stars in the main role. The cast is great, and the subject a real treat though complex. It must have been real challenge for G. Clooney who is usually more at ease in comedy roles...(such as in O brother where are thou , or as Danny Ocean (Ocean films)... A film for whoever likes complexity!
The Venice film festival offers other great films such as IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH acclaimed by critics and the public, a drama overshadowed by Iraq but set in America, in which Jones's son has come home from the war and gone Awol.
When his body is found near his army base, Jones and Charlize Theron as a small-town detective deconstruct the mystery, which has its roots in Iraq.
Another Film is the fabulous Brian De Palma's Redacted. But In the Valley of Elah is a strong, decent film touched by melancholy. Writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) resists his usual tendency to tie up every plot line...
The sad story of Woody Allen's new film Cassandra's Dream came to Venice Film Festival too...This little morality tale is not so different in tone from Match Point (2005) though not as good and from far. Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell play working-class London brothers who need money for wildly different reasons. A rich uncle (Tom Wilkinson again) can provide it, but with terrible strings attached... However Colin Farell delivers a very good performance in the wonderful film "And when did you last see your father", a film unfortunately not in Venice where he should have been !!!!
A great choice of oscar contenders films and performances in Venice, though some missing features are difficult not to notice...
Another missing contender of this year Film Festival is definitely the one critics and the public, we all would have liked to see there, lions for Lambs... And also was missing in Venice the Bee Movie... AMERICAN GANGSTER is the best of all among the latest released Films...
