Self-portraits, many now unrecognised, have been made by artists since the earliest times, in a wide range of media. By the Early Renaissance, during the mid 1400s, we can more frequently distinguish artists depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work. With better and cheaper mirrors, and the advent of the panel portrait, many painters, sculptors and printmakers tried some form of self-portraiture. The probable example by Jan van Eyck of 1433 is the earliest known panel self-portrait.[1] He painted a separate portrait of his wife, and he belonged to the social group that had begun to commission portraits, already more common among wealthy Netherlanders than south of the Alps. The genre is venerable, but not until the Renaissance, with increased wealth and interest in the individual as a subject, did it become truly popular. One of the most famous and most prolific of self-portraitists was Vincent Van Gogh, who painted himself thirty-seven times between 1886 and 1889 [1] In all of these self-portraits one is struck that the gaze of the painter is seldom directed at us; even when it is a fixed gaze, he seems to look elsewhere. These paintings vary in intensity and color and some portray the artist with bandages; representing the episode in which he severed one of his ears. The many self-portraits of Egon Schiele set new standards of openness, or perhaps exhibitionism, representing him naked in many positions, sometimes masturbating or erect as in Eros (1911), with an enormous red erect penis. Stanley Spencer was to follow somewhat in this vein. Edvard Munch made great numbers of self-portrait paintings (70), prints (20) and drawings or watercolours (over 100) throughout his life, many showing him being badly treated by life, and especially by women.[15] Frida Kahlo, who following a terrible accident spent many years bedridden, with only herself for a model, was another painter whose self-portraits depict great pain, in her case physical as well as mental. Her 55-odd self-portraits include many of herself from the waist up, and also some nightmarish representations which symbolize her physical sufferings. Shrek is an Academy Award winning animated feature film based upon William Steig's 1990 fairy tale picture book entitled Shrek! It was directed by New Zealander Andrew Adamson and Los Angeles artist Vicky Jenson and animated by DreamWorks Animation SKG in May 2001. Shrek was the first film to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, a category introduced in 2001. It was released on DVD and VHS on November 7, 2001. Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) is a large, intimidating, green, solitude-loving ogre, who lives a quiet life in his home in a swamp. But this peaceful life is shattered when he inadvertently rescues the stubborn and talkative Donkey (voice of Eddie Murphy), who escapes from his owner after a brief incident involving fairy dust, from soldiers sent by ruthless ruler of the Kingdom of Duloc, Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). Having a task to round up all fairy tale creatures, Farquaad is obsessed with ruling a perfect kingdom and uses the Magic Mirror to select a princess bride he can marry in order to become a king. He chooses Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), who is held captive in a castle surrounded by hot, boiling lava and guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. The Mirror attempts to warn Farquaad something about her, but Farquaad ignores it Shrek tells Fiona that Farquaad only wants to marry her so that he can be king and that he's not her true love. Farquaad then realizes that Shrek has fallen in love with the princess. He and the rest of the citizens begin to laugh before he reminds Fiona that they're one kiss away from their happily ever after. Fiona then shows Shrek her ogre form. Farquaad, disgusted, orders his knights to kill Shrek and lock Fiona back in her tower. Shrek whistles and Dragon smashes through the glass with Donkey on her back. She then subsequently swallows Farquaad. With the fiasco over, Shrek tells Fiona that he truly loves her. They share a kiss that turns Fiona into an ogress all the time, thus possibly destroying the curse; she is initially confused, as she was expecting to become beautiful permanently, but Shrek assures her that she is beautiful.
