Yoshida Brothers with Cyro Baptista
This video captures a trip the Yoshida Brothers took to the United States. Durring this trip - the Yoshida Brothers visited with many musicians to collaborate.
This was one of those collaborations!
CYRO BAPTISTA
Born December 23, 1950 in São Paulo, Brazil, Cyro Baptista arrived in the U.S. in 1980 with a scholarship to the Woodstock-based Creative Music Studio, and has since emerged as one of the premier percussionists in the country. Coinciding with the rise in the public's interest of world music, Cyro has managed to record and tour with some of music's most popular names. His mastery of Brazilian percussion and the many instruments he creates himself, have catapulted him into world renown. Recordings with Other Artists Recently recording with pianist Herbie Hancock on his 2005 release, Possibilites, Cyro's credits read like a 'Who's Who' of modern music. In 2002 Cyro toured with Yo-Yo Ma's Brazil Project (as well as appeared on the Obrigado Brazil album - winner of two Grammy awards), Trey Anastasio (of Phish), and John Zorn. He recorded and performed worldwide with Herbie Hancock's Grammy award winning Gershwin's World. Cyro collaborated with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for a Brazilian Carnival modern jazz concert. For over two years, he toured with Paul Simon's Rhythm of the Saints tour and appears on his Concert in Central Park release. In addition, Cyro toured the globe with Sting in 2001. Performing his unique blend of percussion with some of music's most popular artists has given Cyro remarkable credibility within the industry. The wide range of artists Cyro Baptista has performed and recorded with include: David Byrne, Derek Bailey, Kathleen Battle, Gato Barbieri, Dr. John, Brian Eno, Robert Palmer, Melissa Etheridge, Laurie Anderson,James Taylor, Michael Tilson Thomas, Daniel Barenboim, Bobby McFerrin, Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo Ma, Medeski Martin & Wood, Spyro Gyra, Trey Anastasio, Carlos Santana, Tim Sparks, Sting, Stephen Kent and John Zorn, yet the list goes on. He has also played with many respected Brazilian artists such as Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, Marisa Monte, Badi Assad, and Nana Vasconcelos. Cyro has performed on five Grammy award winning albums: Yo-Yo Ma's Obrigado Brazil, Cassandra Wilson's Blue Light 'Til Dawn, The Chieftains' Santiago, Ivan Lins' A Love Affair, and Herbie Hancock's highly-acclaimed Gershwin's World. He has also recently played on Tony Bennet s Grammy Nominated album entitled Duets - an Amercian Classic. A documentary on Cyro's main project, Beat the Donkey, was recorded for the prestigious WGBH-TV Boston program 'La Plaza' won 3 New England EMMY Awards in 2002, and continues to air on PBS stations nationwide. Cyro appeared in Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel's 1990 documentary film on Fred Frith, Step Across the Border. He has also been composing music for programs on the children's television network Nickelodeon. Beat the Donkey Continuing the momentum, he created his own project: the percussion and dance ensemble known as Beat the Donkey. The group recently released its second CD, Love the Donkey, independently on John Zorn 's Tzadik record label, featuring the percussion-heavy beats and Brazilian rhythms. Beat the Donkey now tours the U.S., expanding into new markets taking the stage at performing arts centers, festivals, and conferences. Cyro's debut self-titled CD with Beat the Donkey, (Tzadik) was picked by The New York Times as one of the ten best alternative albums of 2002. Readers of JAZZIZ and DRUM magazine voted it as "Best Brazilian CD of the Year" and named Cyro "Best Percussionist of 2002." Downbeat Magazine's 51st annual critics' poll selected Cyro as 'Rising Star' in percussion. Billy Martin: Billy Martin plays drums and percussion for the avant-garde jazz-funk trio Medeski, Martin & Wood. Before becoming part of Medeski, Martin & Wood, Martin was part of the NYC Brazilian scene in the 1980's. He performed regularly with Pe De Boi, Batucada and several Bob Moses bands for over a decade. He also joined Chuck Mangione's touring group for three years. Most notably he developed his unique percussion style with The Lounge Lizards and the John Lurie National Orchestra, and has collaborated with artists such as John Zorn, DJ Logic, Dave Burrell and Miho Hatori. He has also started his own record label, Amulet, specializing in eclectic percussion albums. Other collaborations include Iggy Pop, Eyvind Kang, DJ Olive, Ikue Mori, John Scofield, Maceo Parker, Marty Ehrlich, and Min Xiao-Fen.
Martin also sometimes goes by the moniker Illy B. The most notable releases as Illy B include the Illy B Eats series of breakbeat records. DJ Logic convinced Martin to record a breakbeat album for DJ's and other producers to use and remix. At the last minute, Martin decided to place an insert which invited remixers to submit their mixes for a follow up compilation, and Drop the Needle was born.
This year (2006) has been prolific for Martin as he created new chamber compositions for John Zorn's Tzadik label, Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood released Out Louder on MMW's new label Indirecto, a slew of new art, and an upcoming drum book entitled Riddim. Timeline of these events

Wu Tong - Solo in Beijing
Wu Tong, master sheng player, introduced to us by Liu Sola He first visited us in NYC in 2003 right before going on tour with Yo Yo Ma as part of the Silk Road Tour filmed by Verna Gillis/Soundscape in June, 2007
with support from the Asian Cultural Council
http://www.soundscapepresents.com
"We each play a different instrument, Western or Chinese, but the musician himself is the same. We play the music with the same feeling and the same heart, so its very easy to cooperate with each other."
Born to a musical family in Beijing, Wu Tong has become his generation's most visible proponent of traditional Chinese music. As a founding vocalist of the pioneering rock band Lunhui (Again), which merges Western and Asian traditions, a performer with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, and a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta and Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Wu has achieved an unparalleled following for Chinese music on three continents.
Wu began his musical studies at age five with his father, and soon won dozens of national and international competitions in the Chinese wind instrument category. Throughout his youth, Wu was showcased as a national star, playing for Chinese dignitaries and visiting leaders. He entered the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music's pre-college program at age 11, and upon graduation from the Conservatory at age 19 became the youngest soloist of the China Central Traditional Music and Dance Company, which toured extensively throughout China and abroad.
In 1991, Wu and four Central Conservatory classmates founded Lunhui and began merging the energy of rock music with traditional Chinese form and asthetics. After their 1993 hit "On the Way to Wartime Yangzhou," which set the words of Song Dynasty poet Xin Qiji to music, JVC Japan immediately signed the band. Subsequent recordings in 1995, 1997 and 2001 made Lunhui China's premier rock band in sales as well as live performances. Lunhui became the first rock band to appear on Chinese national television in 2000, and is featured regularly on national broadcasts and pan-Asian cable television.
In 1999, Wu was invited to join the Silk Road Project Workshop at the Tanglewood Music Festival. He was the featured vocalist for "Blue Little Flower," his arrangement of the traditional Chinese folksong, and on the Ensemble's recording Silk Road Journeys: When Strangers Meet, released by Sony Classical. Wu's voice and arrangements are also featured in Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon, the Ensemble's second recording released by Sony Classical. He appears on the latest Silk Road Ensemble album from Sony Classical, New Impossibilities. He has been a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman, and, in 2004, spent several months working with Siemens at its U.S. headquarters to develop looping technology for a new electric sheng.
Wu remains a chart-topping vocalist in China while continuing to travel extensively with the Silk Road Ensemble. In recent seasons, he has appeared with the Ensemble at such prestigious locations as the Aichi World Expo, the Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and Millennium Park. In April 2007, he was featured with the Silk Road Ensemble in a series of concerts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra
