Minor Threat - early performance & interview
Some archival footage I nabbed from some weak documentary - great archival footage of Minor Threat running through 'In My Eyes' - in the basement. Man, you knew even at this point they were great. Followed by an interview with a young Ian MacKaye (SxE - not a set of rules...). Great picture of him in his high school yearbook. Also, the famous 'Hagen Daz' store that he and Henry Garfield (Rollins) worked at.

Ian MacKaye - 1986 - Emocore is stupid
For all you "emo" kids out there, here is Ian MacKaye from 1986 saying, live with his band Embrace:
"I must say one thing. I must say emocore must be the stupidest f$%ing thing I've ever heard in my entire life. But just in case you are wondering, I read in my Thrasher the other day, that in fact, what my band (Embrace) along with other bands (Rites Of Spring, Beefeater, etc) in this city (Washington DC) are playing is emocore. I'm thinking Emo Phillips, the comedian (look it up if you don't know who he is), emocore? Emotional hardcore?? As if hardcore wasn't emotional to begin with. Anyway, it's caca. I hate to say it but you can only hold your silence for too long about this stupid sh#$t."
Just a quick history lesson in emo :)

Fugazi - Waiting Room
To properly celebrate my entrance into the YTUnderground, here's a video to underground band Fugazi's Waiting Room. The symbolism should be easy to get, though I'll admit the video sort of falters during the breakdown. Anyway, check out http://youtube.com/group/YTUnderground for some real awesome underground shiz.

Black Eyes Recording @ Inner Ear
In the fall of 2002, DC's Black Eyes entered Inner Ear recording studio in Arlington, Virginia to record their full-length Dischord debut with Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara. We were lucky enough to get access to the session and what you see here is a loose document of their time in the studio. Running in at under 10 minutes, the following has been whittled down from about 10 hours of footage. The band, the producers and even most of our friends, have never seen any of what we shot. Finally, I am presenting something of what the original project was supposed to be, albeit much shorter in length. I hope everyone enjoys this rare look into the recording process of Black Eyes, Ian and Don. --Micah

REAL HARDCORE!! Void - Who Are You - July 1, 1983
!!WARNING!! the audio has been dubbed to the studio track, if you want the live track with the video, it's on here this is mainly if people haven't heard the song so it's more clear. anyway. This is VOID- They were one of the first local bands popular in the D.C. scene that was from outside the Beltway, hailing from Columbia, Maryland, a suburb located between D.C. and Baltimore. The band formed in 1979 with manic lead singer John Weiffenbach, guitarist Bubba Dupree, bassist Chris Stover, and drummer Sean Finnegan. Many keys to their cult following included Bubba Dupree's Greg Ginn-like guitar style and wild performances, and John Weiffenbach's frenzied behavior. In November of 1981 they cut a demo tape at Inner Ear Studios produced by Ian MacKaye , and were picked up by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson's label Dischord Records. In February of 1982 they made their vinyl debut on Dischord with three songs on the Flex Your Head compilation. That spring they went into the studio to cut twelve songs that were released in September of 1982 as half of the Faith/Void split album released by Dischord Records.
By 1983, Void were incorporating more metal influences into their sound, drawing a crowd that became increasingly violent and their shows became even more chaotic. In the summer of 1983 they recorded an as yet unreleased album for (then) Detroit based Touch and Go Records. According to Touch and Go, they still periodically attempt to get permission to release the album, but to this day that permission is denied by Dupree. Void disbanded in the the fall of 1983, with violence at their shows being a factor in the breakup. In 1992, Eye 95 Records released their November 1981 Inner Ear demo tape as the Condensed Flesh EP.
