Bulls vs. Knicks 1992 Playoffs Game 3 (1 of 2)
I believe this was (and is still) the best playoff series in the modern era of the NBA.
Pat Ewing, Charles Oakley, Xavier McDaniel, John Starks, Mark Jackson, Gerald Wilkins and Anthony Mason against Jordan, Pippen, Grant and company.
If this Knicks lineup doesn't intimidate you, then I don't know what would. They were hard, dirty, relentless and played with an animal instict.
As for the Bulls, they deserve all the credit in the world. Any other team would have been crushed and intimidated by the extreme physical nature of the Knicks. But Jordan managed to lead his team to victory over 7 games.
Personally, I'm having a hard time watching today's NBA with no handcheck rules, phantom calls and sissy fauls. Nowadays, almost any semi-hard foul is a flagrant. Back then you basically had to crack someone's skull to get one. Pat Riley talks about this series in his own book, The Winner Within, and tells this anecdote where he gathered all the players in the traning before the series. Just out of the blue, he says, "some shoe company's marketing executives will hold a conference... I'm wondering any of you will be there". All the players are puzzled, trying to understand what this means.
Riley then continues, "You might be there... in the form of a photoghraph. Every game the Bulls play, photographers wait for Jordan to come hard to the hole, flying in with the ball over his head, tongue hanging out, eyes riveted on the rim, going for a monster dunk. Now, somebody's always underneath Michael in these pictures. they might be bent back, getting out of his way, or they might be standing flat, totally faked out. The marketing experts will review dozens of photos, and print eight million copies. If your photo comes out real nice, if Michael looks like a god while you look like you don't even belong in the same gym, then you could be Michael Jordan's newest poster boy"
"One thing a New York Knick will not be is anybody's poster boy, even if the camera makes us like one. We ain't one. It's an attitude more than anything. Who wants to be the guy that's going to open up the lane? Who want to make it convey for some superstar to kick your ass? Because if that's how you're going to play, you should leave right now."
Knicks players took the message and that was the start of the no lay-up rule which meant doing almost anything to prevent it from happening.
Because of the 10 minute limitation of youtube, I had to make two files, one for each half. If you like the first half, make sure to check the second one, too. The second half is even better than the first. Among numereous other ones, Paxson got hit in the head, Pippen needed a bandage on his chin, and Jordan was hit in the nose during his famous layup in the second half. Jordan finished with 32 pts, 8 rebounds on 12/24 shooting. Of all people, it was Pippen who was fouled out about 2:30 to go in the final period.
This is one for the ages. I can only hope to see a series like this in our lifetime.
In case you're wondering, the commentary was in French and had some major problems, so I had to mute it. Anyway, I hope you guys like it as much as I do.
here's the link to the 2nd half.
