Tribute to Ben Becker
A tribute to the unique talent of Ben Becker, German actor / singer /performer, here singing "Helden" (Heroes), accompanied by The Zero Tolerance Band. Photos are from Ben's films "Trenck," "Comedian Harmonists," and "Santos." Also appearing, sister Meret Becker and stepfather Otto Sander. "Helden" is the story of two lovers who meet by the Berlin Wall, during the time before its fall.

In July and August 1995 Ben Becker staged „Sid&Nancy", the play he wrote, at the Berlin club „Ex&Pop". The lead roles of the production are played by Becker's sister, Meret Becker, the gitarrist from „Einstürzende Neubauten" Alexander Hacke, and Ben Becker himself.
The film documentation by Uli M Schueppel follows the intense, at times chaotic process of this self-styled project, revealing the true path to the actual production with the help of footage taken from the sidelines of rehearsals -- statements, outbursts, individual rehearsals.
The result is a portrait in the tradition of the „direct cinem"; through the crises of the actors' rehearsals, the blending of people and their dramatic roles, reality and theater becomes near and palpable.

In the 1927 film "Metropolis," by German expressionist Fritz Lang, the Molochmaschine was the unrelenting devourer of human manpower that kept the city running. Treating humans as if they were automatons, the monstrous machine is seen in a hallucination as Moloch, the ancient god to whom children were believed to be sacrificed in Phoenecian times. In medieval times, Moloch was often represented as a devil, usually stealing children.

Berlin Alexanderplatz 2000 - within 24 hours, various stories rotate between the heights and depths of the square, between the television tower and the subway shafts, between larger and smaller fates, that slowly but surely become entangled.
There is ASAKI (Marusha) - she knows about the planetary catastrophe, that is approaching and foresees the correlating dramatic events. Her mission is to save the city. Or ANNA (Marie Zielcke), who just wanted to spend a weekend in town to finally find out what it feels like to "take off". But she imagined something totally different. Also KATJA (Nadeshda Brennicke) thought it would be easier to bring her carefully planned coup to an end. But before finally leaving Berlin behind, she needs to find out: How did her boyfriend Franz die? Was it really just an accident?
And not only at this point JO (Baki Davrak) enters the game. He is roaming between the stories, can't or doesn't want to remember how it all happened with Franz. And he doesn't understand, why the security employee WALTER (Ben Becker) and the dubious MILAN (Birol Uenel) are after him... All he wants is to take ANNA on a flight to another dimension. But for that the planets aren't too favourable...
Love, murder, fairytale, drugs, madness, humor and a lot of music -
planet alex moves playfully through various genres.
A sparkling firework of ideas that come together in a greater story. With its driving rhythm, the film sketches the seeming loss of orientation in Berlins city as a pulsating, shimmering network.

This is a very dark, and hopefully powerful video. It takes clips from the movie Closet Land and is set to the music "The Song Of The Gloomy Sunday" and this version is sung by Ben Becker.
If you don't like dark and possibly disturbing/depressing music/videos, then this video is not for you. Be warned; there is nothing fluffy or happy about this video.
The lyrics are sung in German. You can find an English translation of the song by Googling "Gloomy Sunday".
This song is said to be the cause of many suicides and the original composer, Rezso Seress wrote the song after losing his beloved and he eventually committed suicide.

Edit: After comparing the English Lyrics to this version of the song, the third stanza was omitted. Therefore I can only conclude that this version of the song Gloomy Sunday is the closest to the original that can be currently found since the third stanza was added much later in an attmept to make the song sound uplifting (something that this version most definitely does not strive for).
