The women at the Independent Spirit Awards looked beautiful but kept things more casual with their shorter dresses for the afternoon event. Anne Hathaway shined in her off-white dress with feminine details as many other actresses showed off their flirty styles. Cameron Diaz rocked the stripes, as did Michelle Williams in her sleeveless dress with pockets. Mary-Kate stood out with her shoulder pads and long sleeves and the award-winning Penelope Cruz - who had a run in with ex Tom Cruise the night before - look perfect in a frilly hemmed brown dress.

Meanwhile, the men ranged from jeans to suits, but still looked handsome as usual. James Franco didn't manage to shave for the event but wore his pinstripes proudly. Aaron Eckhart, Emile Hirsch and Blair Underwood sported the denim look while Mickey Rourke had fun running around the blue carpet chatting with everyone. Men of all ages wore basic black and white last night at the Oscars. The biggest decision was bowtie or long tie, unless we're talking about Mickey Rourke who stood out in his bright white suit, proving once again he is doing things his way. Brad added more facial hair, upgrading his mustache to full-on goatee. Robert Downey Jr. was clean-shaven and looking adorably young.

The younger crowd mixed up their hairstyles where Zac slicked his back while Robert Pattinson went spiky. They both kept a straight face while James Franco and Dev Patel were all smiles. Many of these men had their beautiful girlfriends or wives by their side, which could explain some of their big grins. The ladies may steal the show year after year, but the Oscars wouldn't be the same without a little manjoyment out on the red carpet.

James Franco kicked off his weekend with a ceremony celebrating his status as the Harvard Hasty Pudding Club's Man of the Year in Cambridge on Friday. The thespians threw James a quickie bar mitzvah as part of his roast, which included wearing an eye patch and a bra in honor of Pineapple Express. James never had a real bar mitzvah, but seemed happy with the substitute as he joked, "Yeah, I guess I wasn't a man until tonight. I don't know if this counts in rabbinical law or whatever, but if it doesn't, I do plan to have a bar mitzvah." James was also a good sport as he kissed his pudding pot and even agreed to pretend to milk a gay cow as a throwback to his Oscar-nominated film.

There's been lots of love for James with all the critical acclaim surrounding Milk, and he recently opened up a little more about the experience of working with Sean Penn. He's also looking sexy on the cover of December's BlackBook, chatting with the magazine about going back to school — he's working on master's degrees at both NYU and Columbia — as well as his career and his past. Here's more:

• On the unexpected success of Pineapple Express: "I find it ironic that I did a lot of serious movies that I worked hard on, and now I’m getting the most response to the movie where I roll a cross joint. The m.o. on that set was to have fun."
• On his looks: "When I was in sixth or seventh grade I remember thinking that I wanted to be really buff, and work out a ton. That seemed really attractive to me. And now, I f*cking hate to work out. I hate spending time on anything physical like that. . . In the morning, I throw some kind of gunk in my hair."
• On being a bad boy in high school: "I had to stop hanging out with a certain group of people, because I got in so much trouble with them. For some reason, I was like a magnet for the police. I would get caught for the stupidest things. . . wandering around drunk, stuff like that. They weren’t the worst people in the world, it was just that I was really dumb when I was around them."

Milk arrived in NYC last night with all its handsome stars out for the red carpet. Details helped host the event and recent cover boy Chace Crawford got dressed up and his usually shaggy hair was perfectly coiffed to attend the screening. Downtown from his grad school in the Upper West Side, Columbia, James Franco let both his hair and facial hair look a little more unruly, but he can certainly pull it off. Another night, another event for Robert Buckley who's a favorite bachelor and a very familiar face these days. There are still a couple weeks before Milk hits theaters, but there couldn't be a better time for a movie with such an important message to speak on the big screen.

James Franco might have been trying to fit right in with the other NYU students with his backpack and clipboard, but somehow we have a feeling he still stands out in class. Last week he poked fun at his student/celebrity status on SNL, but it seems like he's pretty devoted to getting that grad school diploma. Meanwhile on the Hollywood side of things — he signed on to star in an Allen Ginsburg biopic and has Nights in Rodanthe in theaters this weekend, though we might pass or wait for the rental on that one.

Cameron Diaz and Paul Sculfor had another one of their lovers' strolls yesterday, making their way around NYC and pointing out the sights without ever taking their hands off of each other. While Cameron's current movie Shrek Goes Fourth only features her vocal talents, she flexed her goofy comedic muscles with a special guest spot on SNL this weekend. Cameron reprised her role as a cougar and cuddled up to James Franco, but in reality she seems perfectly happy dating a guy her own age.
