Apparently, Haley Joel Osment saw the sense in copping a plea.
The 18-year-old actor pleaded no contest to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of possession of marijuana stemming from the late-night car crash that left him with a broken rib and shoulder lacerations back in July.
He was sentenced to three years' probation and 60 days of alcohol rehabilitation and education.
Glendale Superior Court Judge John Doyle also ordered the Sixth Sense star to attend 26 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings over the next six months and to pony up $1,500 in fines.
Osment did not appear in court, but entered the plea through his lawyer.
Under the terms of the deal, another misdemeanor drunk driving count and a vehicle code infraction were dropped by prosecutors.
At the time of the crash, Osment was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.16—twice the legal limit.
According to police, Osment was driving home when he lost control of his car (a decidedly unhip 1995 Saturn) and jumped a curb in La Cañada Flintridge, crashing into a brick pillar and knocking over a mailbox. He was briefly hospitalized following the accident.
The teen thesp later made amends for the property damages he caused, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office said.
Osment's first brush with the law has not had any apparent effect on his professional life.
The A.I. star recently finished filming Home of the Giants, in which he portrays a conflicted high school journalist who covers the basketball team as it heads toward the state championship.

Despite the sheriff's department's original report that there was no indication of drugs or alcohol being involved when Haley Joel Osment crashed his car into a pillar July 20, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office filed three DUI-related charges Thursday against the former Academy Award nominee.
Osment, 18, is facing misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, driving while having a blood alcohol level higher than the legal limit of .08--the D.A.'s office said Osment's was .16--and possessing marijuana while driving.

The 18-year-old actor was released from Pasadena's Huntington Memorial Hospital Friday after being treated for a broken rib and arm lacerations he suffered in a Thursday morning car crash.
"Haley has been released from the hospital and is resting comfortably at home," his agent, Meredith Fine, said in a statement.
